School principal facing child porn charges

A Kentucky principal who was the subject of some controversy about a decade ago has been arrested by Kentucky state authorities and accused of possessing child pornography.

Police said that they began an investigation after someone at the school complained that they had seen the principal distribute an image of child pornography to someone else. In the course of the investigation, police say that they recovered about 15 images of child pornography that they could connect to the principal.

Prosecutors have charged the principal in state court with 15 counts of distributing child pornography and 15 counts of possessing child pornography, that is, two counts for each image that police located. The principal was given a public defender, and the court set a bail of $25,000. The principal has also been placed on leave from his position.

The principal causes a stir in his school about 10 years ago because he pushed to ban books for what he dubbed homosexual content. One book that was the subject of this controversy had been alleged to have pornographic overtones.

Charges of the possession of child pornography, whether at the state or federal level, are serious matters that almost mandate a vigorous response. A conviction on these sorts of charges can land a person in prison for a number of years.

Moreover, the conviction will ordinarily require a person to register as a sex offender, which can have a long-term impact on a person's personal and professional life. In the case of this man, his career in education may well be ruined.

There are a number of defenses available to these sorts of charges. For instance, the police and prosecutors will have to show that they respected the principal's Fourth Amendment rights when searching any of his personal belongings, including his computer.

Those facing child pornography or other charges relating to sex crimes in Kentucky should strongly consider speaking to an experienced criminal law attorney.
